Center of Attention

I want you to conduct an experiment.  Fill a large bucket about half way with water.  Put a few pieces of toilet paper into the bucket of water.  Wait until the water is completely calm and the paper is only slightly moving gently about or the paper has stopped moving entirely.  Take a glass of water and slowly pour the contents of the glass into the bucket.  Be sure to keep the stream of water from the glass into the bucket at a constant, steady stream.  Take another glass of water and do the same thing, only this time, pour the water from the glass into a different location in the bucket.  Do this again a third time, again at another point in the bucket.  What did you notice?  You should’ve noticed the same thing happening each time.  The paper, no matter where it was located in the bucket, was attracted to the water from the glass coming into the bucket.  Then, when the water stopped coming in, the paper slowly drifted about the bucket of water.  No matter where the water from the glass was being poured into the bucket, the paper was always attracted to this new water.  Take a look at your own life and business the same way.  Don’t try and be the new water coming into the bucket.   That only attracts the paper for a short period of time.  Instead, concentrate on being the water in the bucket.  The new water will only add to what you already have and you can absorb the paper even more.  If you try to be the water from the glass, eventually you will run out.

Looking to the Future

Most people do not spend time everyday just thinking and dreaming.  In fact, most people don’t spend anytime during a week, month or even a year just to stop and think and dream.  I’m not talking about dreaming when you are sleeping or thinking about the work that you have to be doing right now.  I am talking about big picture dreaming and thinking.

Lots of people lose touch with their inner creative self.  Some people do not even have an inner creative self.  Whether or have one or not, you need to develop that creativeness.  Its the only way new things will be built, better technologies will be invented and a greater community can be made.  A great way to develop that creativeness is just to think and dream.

Ever have a great idea?  Heck, have you ever had an idea that was just pretty average but you thought it was a great idea?  If you can’t think of the last great “aha” moment, then you are not dreaming enough.  Don’t just look at the world and accept it for what it is or accept the position and roles that you are in.  Challenge them.  No, I’m not talking about protesting, that rarely ever gets anything new accomplished.  I’m talking about think about ways to make things better, make things different.

The more you think and dream about how to make a better future, the more likely you will be to make that change.

A Crossroads In Your Life

Everyday you are confronted with decisions.  Some decisions are so basic that you don’t even consider them as decisions.  Other confrontations will make you stop, think and really ponder.  Most people think the big decisions will have the biggest impact on our lives; other people think that its the little decisions that define who you are.

The good new is that both of these schools of thought are correct.  It is both the big and little decisions that define us and tell us where to go.  So, if all of the decisions we make have an impact on our life, it will be the way we handle these decisions that will define who we are.

Sure, executives have to make tough decisions; but, the lowest man on the totem poll is also forced with difficult decisions in his own right.  And no matter which option the decision maker choose, it will ultimately be the right decision.  There are no wrong decisions, just bad ways of dealing with the choices we make.  Figure out a way to handle the decisions in your life and you’ll never have to worry about the big (or little) things.

What Inspires Me

I am fascinated on a daily basis by people that have not only started their own business and been truly successful with their business; but, I am also fascinated by those that fail with their business.  To me, both groups of people have very similar, if not the same, qualities and characteristics.  You cannot start a business without doing a tremendous amount of research, being incredibly smart, and devoting your time and energy to solve a problem.  It doesn’t really matter how you research or where you got your knowledge from or what kind of problem you are trying to solve.  All that matters is that you have the will to do it.

The only difference between the two groups – the winners and the losers, the haves and the have nots – is just a little bit of luck.  Unfortunately, luck is something you can’t plan or prepare for, it is something that is just stumbled upon.  But the funny thing with luck is that it has a habit of coming and going as it pleases.

So what really inspires me?  A great effort, a great sense of knowledge, a great understanding of a subject no matter what it may be.  In my mind, if you are an expert in astrophysics or Astro Boy, you have devoted your time to something and can say that you’ve come out on top.
